With age, the skin loses elasticity. The important components of the skin responsible for its elasticity—the body's own hyaluronic acid and collagen production—begin to decline from the age of 25. As a result, the skin has less elasticity and begins to sag. This affects not only the skin on the body, but also the area around the eyelids. In addition to age-related sagging, drooping eyelids can also be genetic. Over the years, fat deposits have also accumulated in the upper and lower eyelid area, leading to severe swelling, known as bags under the eyes, and swollen upper eyelids.

Eye bags and dark circles not only weigh down the eyes visually and contribute to a tired and sometimes sad appearance. They also make us look older and can even negatively affect our field of vision. In this case, eyelid correction/eyelid lift surgery is medically necessary.

Various makeup techniques are only suitable for temporarily concealing the overlapping skin around the eyes. In severe cases, cosmetics can accumulate in the wrinkles, which can lead to unattractive results. Even skin care products such as anti-aging creams and serums have only a minimal, barely noticeable effect. The active ingredients do not penetrate deep enough into the skin, and the amount is usually too small to effectively correct pronounced eyelid wrinkles.

Therefore, cosmetic surgery is the only permanent and visible solution—especially upper eyelid lifting or blepharoplasty.

One of the most common procedures in plastic surgery is eyelid lifting (upper eyelid blepharoplasty), which is also performed by Dr. Münzberg. The relatively low-risk removal of excess fatty tissue and skin from the upper eyelid results in a firm and fresh appearance.

The severity of eye bags and drooping eyelids can range from mild to severe. In cases of severe drooping eyelids (dermatochalasis), vision may be impaired to the extent that the pupil is covered by excess skin in the upper part of the eye. During a plastic-aesthetic eyelid lift, excess tissue is removed, lifting the eyelid.

If you have decided to undergo surgery, we ask that you make an appointment for your eyelid lift. You will receive important information prior to the treatment. Please inform the cosmetic surgeon about any medications you are currently taking. A blood sample will be taken to check your general health. On the day of the operation, you should refrain from using cosmetics around the eye area. Nicotine, alcohol, and blood-thinning medications should be avoided for a few days before and after the procedure.

Aesthetic plastic surgery on the upper eyelid involves two main steps: removing excess skin and removing small pockets of fat. These fat deposits are often responsible for morning puffiness and pronounced drooping eyelids. The operation is performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia or, if desired, under general anesthesia. It takes approximately 45 to 60 minutes.

In upper eyelid lifting, the scar is located in a natural crease approximately 7 mm above the upper eyelid edge. Therefore, no visible scars are to be expected. Initial results are visible after approximately 7 weeks.

The results of the procedure last for at least 10 years.

After the procedure, you should arrange for someone to pick you up and rest for the first few days. Cooling helps reduce swelling. Sleep with your upper body elevated and avoid physical exertion, sunbathing, and saunas. It is recommended that you wear sunglasses for the first few days.

To ensure optimal wound healing, non-dissolvable sutures are used—the sutures are removed after one week.

In cases of significant excess skin with restricted vision, health insurance may cover the costs—following a perimetry test by an ophthalmologist. Recurring inflammation or eczema in the eyelid area may also constitute a medical indication.

Upper eyelid lifting is considered a low-risk procedure. Possible complications include infection, delayed wound healing, scarring, post-operative bleeding, hematomas, and temporary sensory disturbances. In rare cases, excessive skin tension can lead to eyelid distortion.

Minor bruising is normal but usually disappears quickly.
