Signs of aging, such as wrinkles, appear most quickly on the face, hands, and neck. Starting at age 25, the body’s production of collagen begins to decline. Collagen plays a key role in the skin’s elasticity and firmness. A lack of collagen can therefore lead to the formation of wrinkles. However, thorough and intensive skincare can reduce the formation of wrinkles. Often, however, the skin on the neck and hands is neglected, even though these areas require the same intensive skincare as the face. In addition to genetic factors, adequate sun protection, proper skincare, and a healthy diet are important for minimizing wrinkles. However, even proper skincare and thorough sun protection cannot completely stop skin aging. For this reason, many people opt for aesthetic plastic surgery treatments.
In addition to inadequate sun protection and genetic factors, the reasons for seeking a neck lift often include significant weight loss or sagging of the fatty tissue in the floor of the mouth. In this condition, the platysma muscle—which consists entirely of connective tissue in the middle (between the tip of the chin and the larynx)—has become separated.
At the Clinic for Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery, specialist Dr. Münzberg can perform a neck lift if a double chin or a so-called turkey neck is present. The procedure can be performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia or, upon request, under general anesthesia. Dr. Münzberg will be happy to show you before-and-after photos in his office upon request.
The neck lift performed by specialist Dr. Münzberg often involves a combination of liposuction, removal of excess fatty tissue, and platysma suturing. These procedures are necessary to prevent the fatty tissue from sagging again and to achieve the best possible result. During the procedure, the separated muscle is sutured back together.

Please do not take any blood-thinning medications, such as aspirin, for approximately 14 days prior to your surgery date. You should also stop drinking alcohol and smoking. If you need to take medication regularly, please discuss this with Dr. Münzberg during your consultation.
It is particularly important that you are in good health when you arrive for your surgery. Please let us know in advance if you have a cold or are feeling even slightly under the weather.
The incision for a neck lift is made below the chin in a natural skin crease to ensure the scar is barely visible afterward. First, a special solution (tumescent solution, as used in liposuction) is injected into the area to be treated and left to take effect for about 20 minutes. The fat is then suctioned out using very fine, thin cannulas to achieve a good result. Afterward, the excess fat is removed. As part of the neck lift, the platysma muscle is firmly sutured back together in the center to prevent fat from protruding from the floor of the mouth.
Excess skin is then removed, and the wound is closed with a fine subcutaneous suture. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and secured with adhesive strips and a bandage. A chin sling is then applied, which should generally be worn for 10 days. After waking up, you are welcome to stay overnight at our facility. The surgery typically lasts between 1 and 2 hours.
After a neck lift at the specialist clinic, a bandage will be applied and a chin strap must be worn for 10 days. During this time, you should avoid taking full baths. The sutures will be removed after 10 days. Do not apply cold compresses to the treated areas!
After cosmetic surgery, you should take it easy for the first few days and avoid sunbathing, saunas, and physically strenuous activities. The final results will be visible after approximately 8–12 weeks.
As with any surgical procedure, there are risks associated with a neck lift. Dr. Münzberg has years of experience in cosmetic surgery, which allows him to minimize these risks. Swelling and bruising may occur during the procedure, but these are normal and should subside after a few days. Less common risks include infections, circulatory problems, or numbness. You can obtain further information during a personal consultation with Dr. Münzberg.
