The surgery typically takes between 1 and 1.5 hours.
The ear correction is performed through an incision on the back of the ear, leaving a barely visible scar. The Pitanguy surgical technique allows a crescent-shaped piece of cartilage to be repositioned forward to form the new so-called antehelix fold, which is usually missing in protruding ears. This causes the ear to lie flat against the head. One advantage of this surgical technique is that the recurrence rate (the reappearance of protruding ears) is very low. In the surgical technique where the plastic surgeon thins the ear cartilage with a diamond drill and creates a new antehelix fold under tension, the recurrence of protruding ears is significantly higher.
In some cases, it may also be necessary for Dr. Münzberg, a specialist in otoplasty, to additionally secure the posterior portion of the ear near the head to the skull (Pexy suture) during the procedure if the Pitanguy technique described above is insufficient.
After the ear pinning procedure, a head bandage must be worn for approximately 4 to 5 days. The sutures can usually be removed on the 8th to 10th postoperative day. For preschool-aged children, health insurance covers the costs of ear correction surgery.
